Black Pearls

The majority of black pearls come from one part of the world. Many people refer to these pearls as Tahitian Pearls because these islands are the largest provider of black pearls. This is because they have good waters for cultivating the type of oyster that makes dark pearls.

Black pearls are formed in the same way as any other color of pearl. What gives them their unique coloring is the fact that the nacre secreted by the “black-lipped” oyster is dark. Most varieties of mollusks that produce pearls have light-colored nacre.

Like other pearls, black pearls can have a wide variety of colors and overtones. “Peacock” is one of the most popular overtones available, having many different iridescent colors in it. Silver, blue, and rose are also fairly common overtones that can be gotten on these dark pearls.
